Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the ideas of foreign students studying at the Southern Federal University about Russia as a whole, Russian culture and the peculiarities of the mentality of the Russian people. The empirical base of the study was made up of data from an applied sociological study implemented in 2021 by employees of the SRB — FCTAS RAS. As part of the implementation of this research project, a survey of students and postgraduates of universities in the South of Russia, including the Southern Federal University, was conducted. The results of the study. In the course of the survey conducted by foreign students of SFedU, data were obtained reflecting their expectations and ideas about Russia before coming here. Also, the main positive and negative features characteristic of Russian people, according to young foreigners, were highlighted. The dynamics of opinions of foreign students of the SFedU about Russia and the Russian population during their studies in our country was considered. The differences in the perception of the image of Russia among representatives of different groups of countries are determined. It is noted that communication with teachers and Russian students plays a special role in the adaptation of foreign students and the formation of their positive image of Russia.
