Abstract

The analysis of the Eastern Asian type of modernity developed by social philosopher and historical sociologist Johan Arnason is discussed. This type of non-Western modernity includes Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, and South-Korean versions that have some features in common as well as some distinguished features determined by their history and culture. Peculiarities of the Soviet type of modernity are disclosed that have been elaborated by Arnason more than 20 years ago in the process of comparative historical analysis of the Soviet and Chinese versions of the “communist modernity”. Now Arnason applies these features to the analysis of other types of non-Western modernity. The article demonstrates the significance of the application of Arnason's analysis of Eastern Asian modernity to the Russian society that is now in a situation of the reassessment of its modernization perspectives.
