Abstract

The article considers the issues of development doctrine of populationism, which was formed on the basis of the pro-natal policy back in Ancient Rome, as a response to demographic challenges. The purpose of the article is to identify the stages of the formation of populationism based on the photographic method. An analysis of the works of utopian socialists, representatives of political arithmetic and political economy on demographic topics in comparison with specific historical conditions demonstrates the importance of population and its regulation for the state system. The study also shows the evolution of the object of study of demography and the beginning of the development of methods of demographic science, the formation of its categorical apparatus. It is noted that throughout a long historical process, both demographic science and state policy were built on the basis of the doctrine of populationism. Parts of the work reflect the stages of the formation and development of populationism. The instrument demographic science, which arose on the basis of the analysis and improvement of the population mortality tables, are analyzed in detail. It is concluded that the extraordinary popularity of populationism, which has taken place over a long historical period, was dictated by objective historical conditions.
