Abstract

The book is the sixth in the series of publications jointly produced by the Institute of Sociology of Federal Center of Theoretical and Applied Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Sociology of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. It highlights the patterns and problems in various dimensions of urban life – consumption, employment, education, culture, welfare and governance. It addresses historical patterns of urbanization in Russia and China and related issues including the rise of environmental values and behavior. The book provides a perspective on family life, aging and change in social stratifi cation in Russian and Chinese cities. The analysis presented in the book is based on large-scale surveys conducted by Russian and Chinese researchers [monitoring surveys of the Institute of Sociology of FSTAS RAS, Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey – HSE (RLMS-HSE), China Social Survey (CSS)]. The book might be of interest to social scientists and researchers engaged in comparative analysis. It could also inform government offi cials, university lecturers, students and all those who are willing to expand their knowledge of urbanization, Russian and Chinese societies.
