Abstract

The essay, written in 1989, examines a social phenomenon new to the culture of the late USSR - the aestheticization of the ugly, immoral, evil and, in general, everything that had not previously appeared in an open public form on the surface of public life. The phenomenon is qualified as a symptom of the painful socio-psychological breakdown that occurred in Soviet society at the end of “perestroika”. The essay expresses l'esprit du temps and a premonition of imminent radical changes. Notes in the margins of Professor G.S. Batygin make the essay a document of the history of Russian academic sociology.
