Abstract

Currently, the state and society have actualized the tasks of intensifying scientific research and strengthening the role of science and scientific knowledge. The Government has adopted a number of federal and regional programs aimed at engagement young people in research activities. The scientific work of students is an integral part of the educational process, one of the most important types of academic activities. It serves as an integral element of the implementation of the continuity of generations, the process of forming scientific schools, mentoring and introduction to the profession. However, when students are engagement  in it, a several problems arise, which are due to both the peculiarities of the organization of higher education and the personal characteristics of students. This paper examines the elements of students' participation in scientific work in the learning process, their educational achievements at the university and analyzes the problems that limit or complicate the engagement  of students in this kind of educational activity, reduce their motivation and satisfaction with learning in general. The basis for the analysis was the data of a survey of Russian university students conducted by the Center for Education Development Strategy of Lomonosov Moscow State University in November–December 2022 (N=123977). The results of the study show that in the process of learning at the university, a heterogeneous student flow is formed, significantly differing in the quality and forms of training, the realization of individual abilities and inclinations, the level of motivation and requests for higher education. In this regard, the educational process should be organized in such a way as to maximally and comprehensively reveal the individual characteristics of each student, provide opportunities for a flexible approach to the formation of an educational trajectory, and facilitate the involvement of the majority of students in research activities.
