Abstract

Introduction. The principle of activity and self-sufficiency in older age forms the basis of foreign concepts of active aging. In Russian studies, successful aging is associated with “active longevity”, which is studied from various angles: in the context of the onset and respect for old age, overall life expectancy and retirement, labor activity and volunteering, medical and social services, change and acceptance of appearance. A relatively new research trend: the study of the life of the elderly during the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Methods. Focusing on various aspects of active longevity, the author managed to identify and characterize, through self-reflection of the interview participants, the main components of active longevity; to study how active longevity correlates with specific living conditions (restrictive measures) during the period when the coronavirus pandemic began to spread. The use of a qualitative methodology has shown the effectiveness and expediency of its use in relation to older people, as carriers of deeper and sometimes very unexpected answers (especially in the context of the spread of the coronavirus pandemic), which cannot be obtained through mass surveys. Results. Active longevity is perceived by older Muscovites as an important component of a rich, stable life, which involves maintaining mental and physical activity at a level no lower than in the average period of life; availability of opportunities to continue working; respect and recognition from the family, society and the state. This is an opportunity to make personal choices: to be creative, to learn, to be useful to others, even during periods of unprecedented restrictive measures related to the spread of coronavirus. The right attitude consisted in understanding the real threat and taking restrictive measures, helping to trust the “new” course of life. With their own motivation and internal resources, it was possible to maintain some familiar activity and even do something new. Conclusion. The transition to older age seen as a new round of life, while maintaining a familiar and stable life. Active longevity is, first, an opportunity to live in an individually comfortable rhythm, to see the horizon of the future and realize one's own desires, to move forward relying on oneself and with the support of the state and society. Being active at an older age means maintaining physical fitness and intellectual development, having the desire and opportunities for learning, performing professional and creative activities, being useful to others, maintaining a positive attitude and being able to adapt to changes in life. During the period of restrictive measures associated with the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, older people were limited in contacts and movement outside the home. But, even on the “home mode”, they managed to maintain some familiar activity and even do something new, diversify their lives, maintain fullness and enjoyment of life.
