Abstract

Analyzing sociological data from the focus group discussions that took place in the Nizhny Novgorod region, in the Tyumen and Rostov ones in October-November, 2022, the author investigates the current psychological and emotional status of the Russia’s citizens, as well as the problems, that are mostly important for them. Sociological data indicated, that the Special military operation (SVO) in Ukraine, started in February, 2022, as well as the mobilization, announced in September, had the key influence on the citizens’ emotions: many informants felt by the end of the year uncertainty, fear and anxiety. However, despite their concern and feeling of impotence, many focus groups participants supported SVO, especially the old men who used to receive news and analytical information from the federal TV. Despite warring about the current situation, the respondents mostly supported the general vector of the state development. Although the opinion polarization about current Russian politics, many citizens were consolidated within their “closest circle” of family, friends, and like-minded people under the request for mutual help and mutual support.
