Abstract

The problems of actual mutations of urban-knowledge social and spatial relations are under examination. Crucial accent that is done today on knowledge transforms those cities where knowledge-(re)production centres play important roles in their development. The varity of practical implementations nevertheless could be ordered into two main models - university cities and knowledge cities. The first concentrate on the role shifts of universities in their spatial designs. The are elsewhere are becoming the principal city actors and developpers. The knowledge cities are basically concentrate on facilitation of the very process of creation and utilization of the new and practically oriented knowledge. In the first cases the cities' strategies are determined by the needs and aspirations of universities and their members; in the second - the cities swallow knowledge centres, making their places more and more attractive to all kinds of new knowledge producers.
