Abstract

The article looks at the approaches of studying and measuring migrant integration: spheres of integration, methodologies of the situation analysis and assessment of the integration policies effectiveness which are used in the comparative analysis of the European Union and OECD. Special attention is given to the criteria and indicators of integration and their relevance for the Russian case. Central attention is paid to the role of the Russian society in the process of migrant integration: integration potential of the receiving communities, complaints of the Russian citizens regarding representatives of specific migrant minorities. The author analyzes the assessment of the receiving society of the relationship with migrants and the state of the inter-ethnic relations, the role of the information environment in the formation of ethno- and migrantophobias, differentiation of migrant ethnic minorities in the public opinion, phobias of the receiving society. The most important way to form welcoming atmosphere of the receiving society is rising awareness about the norms and traditions of the receiving society — among migrant minorities, as well as rising awareness about the “others” among the receiving society. The article is based on the results of the research of the Institute of sociology, RAS, conducted in summer 2015, which included 40 focus-groups with receiving communities and migrants in five regions of Russia.
