Abstract

The book brings into focus middle income groups in Russia and China. It explores the specifics of employment and economic status of middle income groups, their consumption patterns, patterns of intergenerational mobility, values and attitudes. The book draws comparison between middle income groups of two major Russian cities, on one side (Moscow and Saint Petersburg), and three Chinese cities (Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou) on the other. The comparison allows to speculate on the groups’ evolution in the near and distant future. The book targets professional sociologists, economists and researchers in international relations. It might make useful reading for government officials, lecturers and students, or anyone who might be attracted to the agenda of change in the modern world.
