Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to detect groupings (or clusters) of scholars within Russian urban anthropology from 1950-s to the present time using tools of sociology of science, namely Richard Whitley’s idea about social structure of scholastic disciplines and research areas and Nicolas Mullins’ method which helps to elucidate social links of different types among researchers. The sample includes articles on urban anthropology and urban folklore from the leading Russian ethnological/anthropological journals and additionally monographs and collection of papers on the topic. The authors of the paper modified Mullins’s method and investigated three types of links among urban ethnologists: (1) relationships “research advisor — student”; (2) relations of co-authorships; (3) job in the same department or small institution; (4) participation as authors of papers in the same collection of papers. Altogether the authors of the paper detected 17-19 groupings of urban anthropologists and described some specific features of these groupings. A part of the groupings is ‘single-action’: a participation in a collection of papers is just a short time cooperation among researchers in such cases. When links among coauthors of collection papers are removed from consideration the research area of urban anthropology disintegrates into six groupings. In addition these groupings in such a case are smaller than they were before the deletion. It is important also to mention that a drastic invasion of folklorists to the sphere of interests of urban anthropology happens; moreover they do not rely on ethnological/anthropological research traditions in this area.
