Abstract

The Article analyzes the history of the study of grassroots environmental movements abroad. The relevance of the study of the experience of foreign studies of such movements for Russian science is that currently in Russia the environmental situation has worsened due to the fact that the country has formed a group of interests, ready to make a profit at the expense of environmental conservation. Countries in Western Europe, the United States and Japan in the early 60-ies also experienced an acute environmental crisis. The way out of this crisis became possible due to the wide development of the ecological movement, first of all, at the grass-roots level. The article attempts to analyze the history of the study of grassroots environmental movements in developed countries. Various theoretical approaches to the study of such movements are considered. The characteristics and features of movements identified by various foreign researchers in the process of their study are described. Parallels are drawn between the types of grassroots environmental movements formed abroad and the movements emerging in Russia.
