Abstract

This article proposes a methodology for assessing the number and class of ethnic and confessional groups of lizard and karyms in the Irkutsk province and the Trans-Baikal region at the end of the 19th century. In the case of counting according to the class criterion, karyms and lasers are identified with settled foreigners, while representatives of other estates, states and categories are not taken into account. The calculation according to the language criterion takes into account only native speakers of the Russian language, but then the bilingual representatives of these groups who according to the census indicated the Buryat language as their native language fall out of the calculation. Our technique helps to overcome weaknesses in the calculation of both class and language criteria.
