Abstract

A mentor is a person possessing specific experience and willing to share it with less experienced colleagues in the environment of mutual trust. Social institution of mentoring has come a long way in its evolution. The authors analyze mentoring as an interdisciplinary problem. They illustrate theoretical theses by the data of sociological research. The article examines mentoring in its broader sense as a social institution and narrowly as a process of entering profession, improving professional skills, formation and transmission of competencies and skills. First, enhance education system compliance with modern requirements, achieving a balanced state of labor market and, as a result, reducing the number of professionals with unclaimed skills, overcoming consequences of the demographic crisis and aging of personnel. For the success of the implementation of the functions of mentoring in present-day conditions it is necessary to revise the main principles of the mentor’s activities, development of measures for stimulation of his work, as well as establishment of a special system of mentoring promotion, which would include platforms for the exchange of the experience in this field, and support the mentoring programs in their search for the necessary information and resources.
