Abstract

The evolution of social philsophy in the middle of the 19=th century Russia is under the consideration. The two innovative models of social knowledge construction are examined - personalized by Hertzen and Chaadaev. Both were traditionally attribued to the s.c. zapandniki' wing of the Russian public thought. But more correctly, Hertzen was in fact very ambibalent in his attitude towards western values and practices, and closer to the end of his life - the open western civilization critic. Pyotr Chaadaev in his turn was basically universalist methodologist and philosopher than simply pro=Western thinker. Thus, both philosophers established two lightly correlated traditions in Russian public thinking: moderate zapadnichestvo and critical universalism.
