Abstract

The subject of the research is to study employee motivation. The aim of this work is to summarize the empirical studies of employee motivation at Russian industrial enterprises. Research methods include reviews of scientific literature, staff surveys, re-evaluation of studies. The empirical evidence is based on direct data obtained at industrial enterprises and collected by researchers of the Centre of Activity Patterns and Time Budget of the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (now FCTAS RAS) for the period 1990–2019. The results of the study include analysis of domestic research on the employee motivation for three time periods: 1960-80s, the 1990s, 2000-2010s; the main provisions of the methodology for studying the employee motivation are presented, as well as some results of its approbation at a specific industrial enterprise; the current theoretical and methodological problems of studying the employee motivation in modern Russia are outlined. The findings of the research and main provisions of the proposed methodology can be used in empirical studies of the workers' activity in production and for other occupational groups.
