Abstract

Research on political transformations in Central Eastern Europe drew on civilizational approaches and early versions of modernization theory that presupposed smooth transition to democratic political institutions. However, these approaches encountered difficulties in case of reversal of democratization processes. Thus right-wing populist parties which took power in Hungary and Poland moved in the direction of illiberal democracy in the 2010s. It is demonstrated in the article that the concepts of alternating modernities and interpretation of modernity are relevant for analysis of political processes in Central Eastern European states.
