Abstract

International migration is an important factor in the formation of an integrated space, as it affects the standard of living of the population, socio-economic and demographic potential of the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (hereinafter referred to as the EAEU). This is what determines the importance of monitoring trends in migration processes. However, despite a growing body of research on population issues of the EAEU, the impact of migration on the demographic situation in the member states remains understudied and measures for sustainable demographic development, ensuring national security of each member state and the demographic security of the Union in general, are not proposed. The above allows us to draw a conclusion about the relevance and practical significance of the research topic. The study is based on the works of Russian economists and experts in the field of labor migration in the EAEU, particularly its specific features, causes and trends. As a result of the analysis of the history and current migration stages in the EAEU countries, the authors propose to identify threats to the demographic potential of the Union, to assess the impact of migration processes on the demographic situation in the countries, and to justify the need to develop a concept of demographic security of the EAEU. It is important to strengthen the supranational component of the regulatory activities aimed at the demographic development of each EAEU state, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. It would ensure national security of the member states and demographic security of the Union in general. To reach this goal, it is necessary to create a permanent platform on the basis of the Eurasian Commission on the problems of the demographic development of the Union, and to develop the concept of demographic security of the EAEU with the help of representatives of the central and regional government bodies, as well as leading demographers of the member states. This study contributes to an adequate assessment of the potential of migration processes that characterize the level of socio-economic development of the EAEU member states and outline the impact of the ongoing changes on the future. The results of the study are based on the general characteristics, specific features, causes and monitoring of macroeconomic indicators that determine the current state of migration processes in the EAEU countries. It should be noted that it is necessary to develop measures and clarify mechanisms to ensure migration security of the Eurasian economic space.
