Thetransformation of the drug situation is analyzed on the basis of quantitative andqualitative sociological research conducted by the team of the Sector of Sociology of Deviant Behavior of the Federal Center of Theoretical and Applied Sociology of the RAS at the end of the 80s of the last century and the first two decades of the 21st century. The dynamics of the prevalence of drug use among various groups of the population, from adolescents to the elderly, is considered, as well as changes in chemical structures of the drugs used and transition to “new” psychoactive substances. The article analyzes how the patterns of drug use have changed: circumstances and age of the first drug use, ways of taking drugs in different age and gender groups, transition to episodic drug use. Special attention is paid to changes in motives for drug use over the last decades. The data obtained in long-term studies suggest that, despite a positive trend in decreasing prevalence of drug use in Russia, there is a number of alarming trends that do not allow optimistic assessment of the further development of the drug situation.
