Abstract

A comparative analysis of video games representations and gamer image in Rus-sian and foreign (primarily American and Japanese) animated films and TV shows was carried out. Fundamental discrepancies in the represented discourses and evaluations of this type of lei-sure activity and its subject characteristics were showed. A connection between the attitude to video games shared in society and their representations in cartoons has been traced. For foreign animation, it tries to depict video games and gamers truly, as they are. Contrariwise, domestic animators represent not so much video games and gamers as related stereotypes and phobias dominated in society. They emphasize dysfunctional effects and ignore eufunctions of video game: social and communicative, ethical, cultural, educational, etc.
